Michael Beale’s biggest Sunderland issue as ex Rangers boss faces sack calls

After only seven games at the helm, Beale is already facing considerable pressure from the loyal supporters of the Black Cats.

After just seven games into his stint with Sunderland, fans are already demanding the dismissal of the former Rangers boss, Michael Beale. Taking over from the popular manager Tony Mowbray last month, Beale’s tenure has faced challenges, with only two wins in six games, and the team sliding further away from playoff contention. Following a 1-0 defeat to Hull City, Beale was subjected to taunts from disgruntled fans, chanting “sacked in the morning.” As Stoke City prepares to visit Wearside, there are apprehensions among loyal supporters, with some predicting that the situation may deteriorate further under Beale’s leadership.

As conveyed by the editor of Sunderland Nation fanzine on talkSPORT, the usual scenario when a new coach is appointed involves inheriting a team that is already struggling and not enjoyable for fans to watch. However, Michael Beale’s significant challenge lies in taking charge of a team that fans previously enjoyed watching and swiftly transforming them into a side perceived as subpar.

The fans never lost faith in Tony Mowbray, and Beale has entered the scene only to exacerbate the situation. It’s challenging to pinpoint exactly what has changed. Sunderland originally possessed a vibrant, energetic, and lively young team with quality players, but under Beale, it seems like all that vitality has vanished in an instant. The team is now devoid of joy, pace, and belief.

Previously, they excelled as a team on the counterattack, but currently, every pass appears to be either going backward or sideways, draining the team’s energy. The term that captures it best is ‘draining.’ Under Michael Beale, the team’s ability to create scoring opportunities has diminished. Even in the games Sunderland has won under Beale, the fans haven’t found pleasure in the style of football. In contrast, before, even in losses, there was enjoyment in what was happening on the field. Beale has completely reversed the situation, and not in a positive way.

“It’s not like the fans haven’t given Beale time. The fans have been willing to believe and let him have a go but there’s this draining effect that he’s had on the team and the fans and I don’t know how he’s done it.”
