Just In: Sunderland dilemma over star player’s deal….

Preston will be cautious about retaining one of their key players, considering the circumstances surrounding Jack Clarke’s situation at Sunderland.

They commenced their campaign with an impressive unbeaten streak in the initial eight games, securing victories in six of them. However, in the subsequent matches, they managed to win only five times. This downturn in form has resulted in Preston’s descent from a position near the top of the Championship to the 12th spot.

Manager Ryan Lowe is under increased pressure, especially after another defeat against Leeds United on Sunday, marking five losses in their last eight outings across all competitions. Given the worsening form of Preston, it becomes crucial for them to retain their top players during this January transfer window, with speculation now surrounding Liam Millar.

Jack Clarke’s situation as it stands

There are rumors connecting Liam Millar to a possible transfer to Sunderland, seen as a potential replacement for Jack Clarke if he leaves the club this month. Jack Clarke has attracted significant attention from Premier League clubs, a trend that has continued into the January transfer window. Sunderland is reportedly seeking £18 million for the 23-year-old, who has already scored 13 goals this season. Ongoing discussions about a new contract have hit a snag, with talks reportedly stalling due to a significant gap between the two parties in negotiations over the player’s weekly wage, as reported by the Sunderland Echo.

Despite heavy links to West Ham United in this transfer window, the London Evening Standard suggests that a deal for Jack Clarke is not imminent. Football Insider reports that teams such as West Ham and Brentford are hesitant due to Sunderland’s asking price, believed to be around £20 million. Clarke’s contract runs until 2026, giving Sunderland the luxury of not being under pressure to sell for financial reasons. However, if the player expresses a desire to leave and a substantial offer is made, a transfer could still materialize.

Preston must do all they can to keep Millar

Millar has emerged as one of Preston’s standout performers this season, showcasing his skills with three goals and five assists in 22 Championship games. His assist count is the highest among Preston players, and he ranks second only to Will Keane in terms of overall goal contributions.

The 24-year-old is a Canadian international, having represented his country in more than 20 matches. Currently on loan at Preston from Swiss club Basel, where he has been since the summer of 2021 after transferring from Liverpool. Although his natural position is as a winger, this season he has been excelling as a left wing-back for North End.

Despite occupying a more defensive role, he continues to make significant contributions in attack. With an average of over two shots per 90 and creating 1.18 chances per 90, it’s evident why Sunderland has shown interest in Millar.

Preston has yet to make any signings in this transfer window, so if Millar were to depart, they would need to act swiftly to secure a replacement with just over a week remaining. However, if Jack Clarke stays at the Stadium of Light, Preston may not face this concern, as retaining Millar would likely be more straightforward.

The situation is causing some anxiety for Preston, as Millar plays a crucial role for them, and they will do everything possible to retain him. At the moment, their best hope is for Sunderland to hold on to their key player.
