Kristjaan Speakman has provided an update on Sunderland’s January transfer activities as the final week of the window approaches.
Kristjaan Speakman expresses optimism, stating that he remains hopeful about Sunderland bolstering their squad before the closure of the January transfer window. Despite the team not securing any signings since the window opened at the beginning of the year, their focus is on acquiring left-back cover and a striker at the very least. Speakman notes that the overall transfer market has been sluggish so far, but he anticipates a potential change in the coming week.
Speakman emphasized that financial constraints have not posed a hindrance in the ongoing transfer window. Furthermore, he clarified that none of the club’s main targets have opted for moves to other destinations at this point.
Speakman outlined the club’s strategic approach, stating, “We’ve identified a few key positions that have received significant attention and focus, as you mentioned (left back and up front). We consistently assess the entire squad during each transfer window, considering players who can complement the team and contribute to our overall football philosophy.”
He acknowledged the current sluggish pace of the transfer market, particularly in the Championship, with only a limited number of deals taking place. Speakman revealed that they have presented both permanent and loan offers, but the process is currently contingent on responses from other clubs. Despite the waiting period being somewhat frustrating, he stressed the importance of respecting the decisions of players already registered with other clubs, recognizing that such factors are beyond the club’s control and depend on the timing and squad management of those clubs.
