Chris Lepkowski expressed his dismay at certain West Brom fans’ responses to the purported racial taunts during Saturday’s (3 February) match against Birmingham City.
After Blues midfielder Juninho Bacuna reported racist abuse during the game at The Hawthorns, the former Birmingham Mail journalist tweeted on Saturday that it’s “uncomfortable” that the Baggies employing three black footballers 45 years ago—Cyrille Regis, Laurie Cunningham, and Brendon Batson—is a “free pass to excuse abuse.”
In response to a fellow Twitter user who stated that they hadn’t seen anyone justifying the person’s actions, Lepkowski wrote in another tweet, “Are you being serious?” and that it’s “horrendous” to see how many people had done as well.
Another day of disappointing scenes for West Brom at The Hawthorns
Following the crowd unrest against Wolves on January 28, West Brom would have preferred that the match against Birmingham had proceeded without incident.
However, such was not to be the case, as it is said that Bacuna experienced racist harassment, which is intolerable in any setting.
It is quite surprising if anyone is supporting those acts because the Baggies are a far better and more proud club than that.
Another week where the focus has shifted from what should be happening on the field to what is happening in the stands, namely a match between two competing teams trying to send their supporters home satisfied.
Even though there is only one individual at fault in this case, it is still one too many, and the pattern of the previous two weekends needs to end.
Carlos Corberan is considering becoming a free agent, according to recent West Brom news.
