David Moyes has been slammed for the “nonsense” decision not to start Maxwel Cornet in West Ham United’s clash with Manchester United by talkSPORT broadcaster Tom Rennie.
On Sunday, February 4, the Hammers played a respectable game at Old Trafford but were unfortunate to lose 3-0. Rasmus Hojlund’s goal and Alejandro Garnacho’s double saw Moyes’ team leave empty-handed.
Even though Cornet played well in the Irons’ draw with Sheffield United, Rennie was incensed by the Scotsman’s choice to start the winger in the 72nd minute, especially after Moyes had let Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma go on deadline day.
“Oh… and whether you like Cornet or not, he’s what you have, so start the guy, and develop him,” he wrote in a letter to X on February 4. Everyone else is hurt or has been sold.
“He scored on his last start, and eighteen months ago, you liked him enough to pay £17 million.” I’m tired of this foolishness.
Moyes ‘nonsense’ pulling West Ham down
West Ham United’s effort at Old Trafford was undoubtedly not worthy of a 3-0 loss, and if circumstances had been different on Sunday, they might have been able to take home all three points.
Given the few attacking alternatives available to the Irons at the moment, it does seem strange that Moyes started Ben Johnson in a more advanced place rather than giving Cornet a rare start.
The 27-year-old has shown promise when he has been able to play this season, despite his limited playing time. He would have given West Ham’s assault another dimension. The Hammers should be using him since they spent a lot of money on him, as Rennie said.
As the Irons continue their dismal recent run of play, fans have been eager to vent their dissatisfaction with Moyes thus far this season, and that is unlikely to change.
Now that his future and contract are in jeopardy, the Scotsman wants to win over some of the fan support as quickly as possible.
In other West Ham news, Moyes provided an update regarding his London Stadium contract status.
