The quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes, has stated that he hopes to become an NFL head coach in the future.

The 28-year-old Mahomes appears to have been motivated by his time with Chiefs coach Andy Reid. The two-time MVP is one win away from finishing his sixth season as Kansas City’s starting quarterback and his seventh overall, all under the guidance of the same coach.

Following his 2012 departure from the Philadelphia Eagles, Reid signed with the Chiefs. In the past, he has served as an assistant to no fewer than four current NFL head coaches. The four players are Doug Pederson of the Jacksonville Jaguars, John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens, Sean McDermott of the Buffalo Bills, and Todd Bowles of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Over the previous 20 years, a total of 11 of Reid’s former assistants have taken on head coaching roles at different teams around the league. Mahomes is not ruling out a career in coaching, even though he still has a number of playing years left in him.

Eleven of Reid’s former assistants have become head coaches of different teams around the league in the last 20 years. Despite still having a few of playing years remaining in him, Mahomes is not discounting a future as a coach.

Mahomes went on to say: “Him and guys like Blake Bell, who have been in the league for a while (playing) different systems and bring energy every single day, I think those guys could be coaches if they wanna be, but for now, let’s let ’em keep playing with us.”

Before joining the San Francisco 49ers, running back McKinnon played for Mike Zimmer and the Minnesota Vikings for four seasons. Under Kyle Shanahan, who will coach against McKinnon and his Chiefs colleagues at Super Bowl LVIII, he endured three seasons marred by injuries.

While Bell had Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly as head coaches following their one-year stints in charge following Harbaugh’s departure, he also had a brief encounter with Shanahan in San Francisco.

The tight end continued to play for Coach Zimmer in Minnesota, where he was paired with McKinnon. Following that, he had a brief stints as a player with Doug Marrone’s Jaguars and Mike McCarthy’s Dallas Cowboys.

Compared to his colleagues, Mahomes has not had as many new coaches. Working with Coach Reid for a few years, though, would be really beneficial. His several offensive coordinators who afterwards became coaches elsewhere could also do so.

Before leaving for the Chicago Bears in his inaugural season and coming back after four years, Matt Nagy held the post. Another player who might return to the Chiefs after most recently leaving the Washington Commanders is Eric Bieniemy.
