The Brooklyn Nets made a few significant acquisitions that would likely affect several teams and the remainder of the season even though they were not prepared to blow everything up at the NBA trade deadline. Royce O’Neale was one of them, and on Thursday they sent him to the Phoenix Suns.

Despite having only been with the team for approximately a year and a half, the seasoned 3-and-D wing developed a close bond with the Brooklyn fan base. His output has decreased this season, but his effort has always been valued. In his formal departure speech, O’Neale is repaying the favor by expressing his affection for the city.

“I appreciate Brooklyn giving me this chance and loving the child.a unique spot in the path for eternity,” he wrote on Friday.

Before being moved to the Nets in June 2022, O’Neale spent the first five years of his career with the Utah Jazz. After Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant were traded by the front office last season, he swiftly adjusted and became a member of the team. Given that his contract is about to expire, it didn’t make sense for the 20–31 team to hold onto the 30-year-old.

In an effort to set itself up for future success, Brooklyn acquired three second-round picks in the deal, adding to their already extensive asset pool. After signing with the Suns, Royce O’Neale finds himself in a much more prosperous situation. Phoenix gains another dependable floor spacer with his career 38.1 3-point shooting %, which should make him an important bench addition going forward.

Hopefully, O’Neale can find acceptance in the desert, similar to how the BK welcomed him during his brief but unforgettable time with the Nets.
