ESPN REPORT: After the first year of the new deal, the Vikings are reportedly “hesitant” to give wide receiver Justin Jefferson fully guaranteed money.

The Minnesota Vikings’ standout wide receiver Justin Jefferson’s contract has become a subject of much discussion, with rumors circulating that the team is hesitant about the guaranteed money in his new agreement.

Vikings: Predicting Justin Jefferson's contract

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk emphasized the team’s position and disclosed that the Vikings may need to make some exceptions in order to keep Jefferson on staff.

The team’s “rule,” according to Florio, “that full guarantees will apply only to the year in which the contract is signed,” must be given exceptions, he said. “They have granted quarterback Kirk Cousins an exception in this regard. They HAVE to create it for Jefferson as well if they want to keep him around and keep him happy.

The Vikings have not disclosed any information on their talks with the standout wideout in spite of this news.

Florio voiced his disapproval of the team’s strategy and emphasized the possible repercussions of trying to push Jefferson’s tolerance too far.

“With Justin Jefferson, they are playing with fire on several fronts, and his patience will finally run out. Florio remarked, “I can tell with confidence that J.J. is extraordinarily patient, but his patience will have its limitations.

“It’s not the dollars, it’s the structure,” the NFL insider continued. Beyond the first year of a contract, they don’t want to fully guarantee money for any position other than quarterback.

NFL fans have taken issue with the article, highlighting the importance of Jefferson’s contributions to the Vikings since he was selected with the 22nd overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. He has routinely over 1,000 receiving yards in four seasons, and in 2022 he led the league in receptions and receiving yards.

Because of his effect on the field, Jefferson has established himself as a vital member of the Vikings, even though his performance in the previous season was somewhat lessened owing to fewer starts. As a result, both the league and fans are very interested in the ongoing contract negotiations.
