Mike Evans’ NFL career has been all but legendary. Over the course of ten full seasons, the former first-round choice in the 2014 NFL Draft has enjoyed an extremely rare run of success. He has never played fewer than 13 games or had fewer than 1,000 receiving yards in a single season. Given everything Evans has accomplished as a professional—winning a Super Bowl, being picked to five Pro Bowls, and being named to two All-Pro teams—it’s surprising that he will only be 31 this coming season.
Evans is among the best to have played in the NFL in the past ten years, and clubs hoping to win it all in 2024 may find that he makes a significant difference. More precisely, a few teams in his native Texas that are just outside of Super Bowl contention would benefit from the future free agency. Evans, a native of Galveston who attended Texas A&M for his undergraduate career, may be headed to the Houston Texans or Dallas Cowboys in the NFL Free Agency class.
Mike Evans should be pursued by the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans.
Quarterback CJ Stroud, the Offensive Rookie of the Year, led the Houston Texans to an incredible first season under head coach DeMeco Ryans. The Texans not only finished first in the AFC South this past year, but they also gained recognition as a serious contender in the AFC in 2023 because to CJ Stroud.
And you anticipate this team will only grow better in the future.
Even if Nico Collins emerged and developed for the Texans in 2023, having a guy like Mike Evans in the mix would undoubtedly assist. Collins and rookie Tank Dell, whose season was tragically cut short by a knee injury, developed into a real threat each week in that attack.
With Evans joining the team, the salary cap-rich Texans may add another large player to the outer line and bring a much-needed veteran presence to cause matchup problems for opponents in the upcoming season. With a quarterback like Stroud who distributes the ball well, having that mix of size and speed all over the receiver position would be a somewhat unfair edge.
In free agency, Evans might also be a compelling fit with the Dallas Cowboys. This kind of move would require the Cowboys to remove both Michael Gallup and Brandin Cooks, but providing Dak Prescott with more (regular) weapons in the passing game is essential for that club going ahead.
The Amari Cooper trade hasn’t held up well over time, and CeeDee Lamb appears to be taking on more and more responsibility for himself every year. Evans is exactly the kind of player the Cowboys need to step in and relieve pressure.
In either case, Evans might find it very advantageous to return to Texas. When free agency begins, he will surely have many suitors everywhere.
