BREAKING NEWS: Atlanta Braves Just Confirm Two Top Experienced Stars Want To Leave The Club

This shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone, but the Atlanta Braves were never going to be able to keep all five dozen or so guys they currently have in spring training camp. Spring training roster cuts were always inevitable and the first few waves are probably not even going to be all that consequential as they will primarily be minor leaguers who never had a chance of making the Opening Day big league roster being sent back over to minor league spring training to get ready for their season. That is precisely what happened today as the Braves announced that they were sending both Hayden Harris and Taylor Widener back to minor league camp.

Braves News: Widener and Harris are returning to minor league camp.
Though neither of the two players in question was really discussed this spring, Hayden Harris is the most well-known of the two and has received some love on the Braves organizational prospect lists. Although Harris nearly lost out on a chance to play professionally, he persuaded the Braves to sign him as a minor league free agent, and in 2023 he recorded some impressive strikeout totals while coming out of the bullpen at three different minor league levels.

Conversely, Widener is a minor league relief arm that the Braves acquired this summer on a minor league contract. Widener spent the 2023 season in Korea, but he had previously played for the Yankees and Diamondbacks organizations.

In the end, these actions will not have a significant impact on 2024. Although it seems unlikely that either player will contend for a big league roster place this season, the Braves are starting to reduce the size of their big league camp, which means we should start to learn more about the competition the team will face for the few available roster slots. Anticipate an increasing number of cuts to be made and the formation of the Braves roster for 2024 as the major league regulars should see an increase in playing time over the course of the next week or two.
