Vic Fangio’s exit from Miami is described by Mike McDaniel.
Vic Fangio was released by the Dolphins prior to his hiring by the Eagles. HC Mike McDaniel elucidates on this.
INDIANAPOLIS: If it had been possible, the Eagles would have hired Vic Fangio last season, but the schedule just didn’t work out.
Therefore, it came as no surprise when they eventually had the opportunity to hire him this summer.
However, why did Fangio only spend one season in Miami?
At the NFL Combine on Tuesday, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was questioned regarding the divorce, which was described as “mutual” at the time.
“If I claimed I was anticipating that at all during the season, I would be lying,” McDaniel remarked. And I believe Vic would have the same emotions. Essentially, what transpired was that I believe it’s critical that you detach yourself from your emotions at the conclusion of the season, reflect, and have incredibly productive conversations with everyone on whom you rely. When it really came down to it, it looked like we both had the chance—that is, it would be best for both of us to literally split ways after having a lot of fruitful and healthy chats.
Thus, it wasn’t expected. We felt that going in a different route would benefit us all, which is something we both believed in and were thrilled about going forward, and I believe this was a result of our excellent communication.
Anyone keeping track wasn’t surprised by the separation. Numerous rumors and rumors emanating from Miami suggested that it might be going in that direction. Additionally, it appeared that McDaniel and Fangio were an unusual combination from the start.
Fangio was available, and the Eagles took advantage. Following their departure, the Dolphins appointed Anthony Weaver as their new defensive coordinator. Fangio has been an NFL coordinator for more than 20 years, whereas Weaver is a rookie defensive coordinator.
This Palm Beach Post article highlights what appears to be some interpersonal issues between Fangio and the author while he was in Miami. We’ve also heard about Fangio’s tense relationships with certain players ever after his one-season stint with the Dolphins ended. The 65-year-old coach didn’t get along with several of the players, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus in an interview.
Although some players didn’t appear to like Fangio’s traditional methods, his defense in Miami was largely effective up until late in the season when injuries started to pile up.
It was a timing issue that prevented the Eagles from appointing Fangio as their defensive coordinator following the 2022 campaign. Following the Super Bowl and after Fangio had already decided to sign a contract to join the Dolphins, Jonathan Gannon was appointed head coach of the Cardinals. Thus, in Week 15, the Eagles demoted Sean Desai, a fangio disciple they had subsequently recruited.
There is benefit to Fangio. They know they have the teacher instead of the pupil. Additionally, the Eagles have already showed some respect for Fangio this offseason. On the defensive end of the ball, he has virtually completely replaced his coaching staff with former coaches Clint Hurtt and Christian Parker.
It follows that Fangio will have a lot of influence on hiring decisions due to his experience.
The Eagles’ general manager, Howie Roseman, said, “I’m sure he thinks that.”
When it comes to player acquisition over the summer, Fangio will undoubtedly have some sway because the Eagles last hired a seasoned defensive coordinator in 2016, Jim Schwartz.
Roseman remarked, “Obviously, great respect for Vic, known him for a long time, and he’s had tremendous success.” “I think it’s obvious that we value team building when we talk about it, but it’s also important to understand what the coordinator and the system value in order for the system to function well.”
