Important players on both sides of the ball have contracts expiring with the Kansas City Chiefs, who won the Super Bowl for the second time in a row. Superstar defensive lineman Chris Jones, the cornerstone of this Chiefs defense, is one of those players whose salary is likely to be quite large.
Chris Jones’s Next Contract Is Expected to Pay Him $28.4 Million Per Season
Based on Spotrac’s market value tool, Jones is expected to earn $85 million over the course of three years. It comes out to an average yearly pay of $28.4 million. Jones, who turns 30 in July, led the Chiefs in quarterback hits with 29, tackles for loss, and sacks with 10.5.
There is “growing optimism,” according to The Athletic, that the parties will reach an agreement that will keep Jones in Kansas City for the long run. The team’s main priority, according to general manager Brett Veach, is to resign Jones.
They just took action to clear up cap space, releasing Marques Valdez-Scantling to make $12 million more available. L’Jarius Sneed is anticipated to be franchised by Kansas City, and a sign-and-trade scenario has not been ruled out.
The deadline for the Kansas City Chiefs to sign Jones is March 11th, after which other teams may step in.
The Chiefs still have time to work out a new contract with Jones and his management group, but all other interested clubs can start contract negotiations with unrestricted free agents on March 11.
Following his declaration at this year’s Super Bowl parade, “We ain’t done yet,” it appears like Jones plans to resign and pursue a third consecutive title ring. But there is a scenario in which a deal falls through and he becomes a free agent. If Kansas City is unable to re-sign him by March 11th, then several teams will be able to present their offers in the hopes that this scenario materializes.
