Matt Chapman is moving to San Francisco in search of better opportunities after leaving Toronto’s hot corner.
According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, the Giants and the third baseman for the Toronto Blue Jays last season reached an agreement on a three-year, $54 million contract.
Heyman’s story from Friday night stated that Chapman would receive $20 million in 2024, $18 million in 2025, and $16 million in 2026 if the contract’s options are accepted.
When the Jays qualified for the wild-card playoff round in 2023 for the second straight year, the 30-year-old Chapman was chosen the Gold Glove winner.
In 140 games, Chapman concluded the previous season with 17 home runs, 39 doubles, 66 runs scored, and 54 RBIs. After winning April’s Player of the Month award from the American League, he began to fade.
Following the conclusion of the fourth round of the 2024 MLB draft, Toronto will be awarded a draft pick, as Chapman turned down the Blue Jays’ qualifying offer.
Chapman was first acquired by the Blue Jays in a trade with the Oakland Athletics in March 2022.
Chapman played for Bob Melvin during his five-year stay with the A’s, thus he is acquainted with the new manager of the Giants.
