The Twins almost lost Carlos Correa a year ago. Minnesota is now ready to compete once more.

The Minnesota Twins found themselves in a tough situation long before the division was won, the playoff losing run ended, and Royce Lewis launched so many grand slams.

Carlos Correa and the San Francisco Giants reached a 13-year, $350-million agreement about a year ago.

The 2022 Twins had their second consecutive losing season in addition to going from being tied for first place on Labor Day to finishing 14 games behind the Cleveland Guardians. Few people outside of the company were aware of the club’s plans when they lost out on a big deal for Correa, the core star they intended to develop.

Derek Falvey, president of baseball operations for the Twins, remarked, “It was super late.” Carlos gave me a call to inform me that things were moving in that way. Despite the fact that he had only been here for a year, it was a somewhat emotional call for both parties. Although I was pleased for him and his family, I was eventually unhappy for us.

The Twins, who were devastated to lose Correa to San Francisco, had previously prepared a number of backup plans in case they were outbid. They would only improve the roster in other ways with the money designated for the great shortstop.

While there were many doubts within the Twins, there were few concerns outside of the organization over their intentions to try to contend in 2023.

The Twins were pleased with how a number of young players who they thought were ready to contribute in the majors were developing. Additionally, trade negotiations were in progress to address frontline starting pitching, another critical necessity.

The Twins believed there was a way to compete in a diminished American League Central even without Correa.

After a whole year and a half, the Twins’ confidence has paid off, placing them in a stronger position heading into the 2024 campaign.

Not all is as it seems. The Twins still need a TV rights agreement, they are cutting salary at a time when it would be more prudent to acquire players, and the season is just three and a half months away.

The Twins are the clear favorite to win the division for the fourth time in the last six seasons, though, thanks to their successful postseason run, contentious deal involving their star player, and the return of Carlos Correa after a further 28 days in free agency.
