49ers Sign “Brilliant”Player In 2023,But He Might Now Leave In The…
The 49ers have recently refrained from re-signing a few of Nick Bosa’s wingmen, allowing players like Arden Key, Samson Ebukam, and Charles Omenihu to depart during the last two free agency periods. Although it appears like Chase Young will do the same, the NFC champs aren’t giving up on getting a compensatory selection just yet.
In less than a week, Young will begin to test the market. ESPN.com’s Dan Graziano reports that the 49ers are interested in re-signing the recent trade acquisition, despite the fact that they owe a sizable sum of money for D-line fees. One of the more intriguing plots of this free agency season will likely hinge on how teams perceive Young.
Young missed more than a year of play due to a severe knee injury, but he started this past season with some encouraging indications. The Ravens, Jaguars, and 49ers expressed interest in trading for Young after he recorded five sacks in eight games with the Commanders the previous season. On a historic deadline day in Washington, the 49ers acquired Young for a third-round comp selection after the Commanders lowered their asking price. Young finished his Bay Area regular season tenure with 2.5 sacks, so the combination did not quite go as planned. In Super Bowl LVIII, he did add a sack of Patrick Mahomes, though.
It appears that the 49ers could have trouble re-signing Young if his market rises far above the “prove it” stage. According to Graziano, some clubs are still fascinated by Young’s potential. Young, a former Heisman contender, came into the league as one of the best defensive prospects of the twenty-first century.
The franchise tag has taken Josh Allen and Brian Burns off the market, which could raise interest in Young. However, other edges, including Danielle Hunter, Bryce Huff, and Jonathan Greenard, are expected to become available as well. As of right now, it’s hard to determine Young’s position on the market, but a team that sees this as a buy-low chance for a guy recovering from an ACL injury and a torn patellar tendon could be able to get a deal.
At this stage of his career, the former Defensive Rookie of the Year arguably fits best as a backup pass rusher. After seeing 2022 second-round selection Drake Jackson’s injury-plagued comeback to action last season, the 49ers could certainly use his presence. Clelin Ferrell, Bosa’s starting bookend mate, is also expected to be available for free agency. As a result of a contract modification, Randy Gregory is also.
While Brock Purdy is still a rookie, Bosa is signed to a record-breaking $34 million a year contract with the 49ers. They signed the agreement subsequent to offering 2020 contract extensions to Arik Armstead and granting $21MM-AAV to Javon Hargrave in free agency the previous year. A noteworthy second contract for San Francisco Young would be an intriguing roster-building addition.
