For both the 49ers and the Chiefs, the Super Bowl aftermath held historical significance and sparked discussions and introspection about crucial plays in the game. While the Chiefs were enjoying their successful championship defense—a feat they hadn’t achieved since the Patriots’ 2003–04 campaign—the 49ers were disheartened by their losses in back-to-back pivotal games against the same opponent.

In the middle of the controversy, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan came under heavy criticism for his decision to play the ball first in overtime, which eventually led to their loss. Nonetheless, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid appeared to present a more balanced take of Shanahan’s contentious choice in a recent interview.

Reid explored the nuances of the scenario, taking into account the consequences of the recently enacted overtime laws, in an edition of the “3 and Out” podcast featuring John Middlekauff. He brought up a crucial Divisional Round match between the Chiefs and the Bills, in which the Chiefs’ desperate attempt to force overtime in the last seconds led to major rule modifications. Shanahan has received a lot of criticism, but Reid stressed the decision’s unpredictable nature, saying, “Shanahan is a brilliant guy.” Really, that was a toss-up.”

Reid’s remarks, which acknowledged the 49ers’ formidable offense and the possible dangers of handing the ball back to the Chiefs, alluded to the complex strategic factors at work. He disclosed that the Chiefs had deliberated and practiced for a number of OT situations in great detail, implying that Shanahan’s choice was not as simple as it first appeared.
