Three potential landing sites for Jordan Montgomery
Over the past 24 months, Jordan Montgomery has gained significant recognition.
One of the best pitchers in the league, Montgomery had begun to show after being traded to the Cardinals. But he truly came of age during the Rangers’ World Series triumph. Despite the Yankees’ lack of faith in him to open the postseason, he was instrumental in the Rangers’ victory.
Even without his outstanding season, Montgomery had a strong postseason. 188.2 innings pitched versus the Cardinals and Rangers with a 3.20 ERA, 1.193 WHiP, 48 walks, and 166 strikeouts belied his 10-11 record. A big contract will be presented to him; where he signs it is the only thing that is unknown.
Jordan Montgomery is one of the best free agents available, but he is still unsigned. Here are three possible locations for landing.
Texas Rangers
Montgomery is anticipated to return to the Rangers. Randy Miller of NJ.com claims that because Montgomery had such a positive time in Texas, he would like to return there. The Rangers want him back. If Montgomery returns to Texas, he will also receive free barbecue for the rest of his life. Because it is anticipated that Tyler Mahle, Jacob deGrom, and Max Scherzer would miss the majority of the 2024 season due to injury, the Rangers rotation is particularly susceptible. The Rangers don’t know their salary status because of the uncertainty around broadcast money. Reporter Evan Grant of Dallas Morning News said he doesn’t think there will be a reunion in light of this. Reuniting with the Rangers makes logical, but financial concerns might sour the relationship.
Yankees in New York
The Yankees are trying to make up for the 2022 deadline trade of Montgomery to the Cardinals. Miller added that Montgomery was the Yankees’ initial pick to strengthen their starting lineup. Although Marcus Stroman has since signed with the New York Yankees, the Yankees are not out of the picture. Nestor Cortes and Carlos Rodon are in doubt following their injury-plagued 2023 campaigns. Corbin Burnes was acquired by the Orioles to lead their rotation in the meantime. Montgomery may be the additional arm the Yankees need.
Red Sox of Boston
It’s difficult to understand what the Red Sox are doing. Throughout the summer, they have given conflicting signals about how willing they are to spend. But Theo Epstein has returned to the Red Sox as a senior advisor and a portion of the team’s ownership. It is anticipated that he will force John Henry and the other owners to invest in the team outside of their comfort zones. If the Red Sox are able to find a buyer for Kenley Jansen, Jon Morosi surmised that Montgomery might be signed. Now that Epstein is back in the fold, dealing Jansen might not be necessary.
