Chris Jones Signs Huge Contract; What Does That Mean for Donald?

While he was the highest-paid defensive tackle in the NFL, Aaron Donald, a top player for the Los Angeles Rams, hopefully relished the title.

Chris Jones, the defensive tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs, surpassed Donald to become the highest-paid player at his position on Friday when he inked a massive extension. Approximately $95 million of the nearly $160 million five-year agreement is guaranteed.

These numbers just beat out the $95 million fully guaranteed three-year contract that Donald signed in 2022, at least when it comes to average yearly value ($32 million vs. $31.67 million).

It would make perfect sense for Jones to outearn Donald in terms of compensation if anyone could. Jones has amassed 26 sacks in the last two seasons, helping the Chiefs win back-to-back Super Bowls and being selected to the first team of the Pro Football Hall of Fame twice.

In each of the previous five seasons, the Mississippi State product has also been selected to the Pro Bowl. It has been amazing to watch Jones’ contract issue develop over the last 12 months.

In order to negotiate a new contract, the three-time Super Bowl winner missed the opening game of the 2023 season. The next week, the parties finally reached an agreement on a one-year contract. Now, Jones and the Chiefs reach a mutually beneficial agreement that will enable Jones to remain in Kansas City for the foreseeable future.
