“I Will Leave For Him To Play” New England Patriots Top Sensational Star Announced His Departure…….

Which Patriots are free agents? Every player who could leave in 2024

With the New England Patriots’ 2023 season officially over, it’s time to move on to the 2024 offseason. For a good portion of the roster, that means some hard decisions in free agency.

Sunday’s game against the New York Jets likely marked the final team we’ll get a chance to see several players in a Patriots uniform.

According to contract info from Over The Cap, there are 21 players on the active roster whose contracts are set to expire this offseason. Whether it’s a new opportunity elsewhere, retirement or the Patriots moving on, a number of players will be leaving New England in the coming months.

Here’s a rundown of all the players whose contracts are up, and who’s likely to leave:

Quarterbacks

QB Nathan Rourke (ERFA)

Rourke was picked up off waivers last month, so his future remains uncertain. He’s an exclusive rights free agent (ERFA). That means if the Patriots want to keep him, they can give him a dirt-cheap contract that he has to take. So if they want him, he’ll be sticking around.

Running Backs

RB Ezekiel Elliott

Like most players on this list, Elliott is an unrestricted free agent (UFA). He’s set to hit the open market this offseason after a solid season as a role player in New England. He didn’t play like the superstar he’d been in Dallas. But he showed he can still play at age 28. He’s a candidate to return. But there will likely be competition for his services.

Wide Receivers

WR Kendrick Bourne, WR Jalen Reagor, WR Tre Nixon (EFRA)

Bourne is the real question mark here. It looked like he was on pace for a stellar year before his season-ending knee injury. His run in New England has been bumpy, but successful at times. He’s expressed a desire to return. But he could be primed for a fresh start once free agency hits.

Tight Ends

TE Hunter Henry, TE Mike Gesicki, TE Pharoah Brown

The Patriots could have a full reset at the tight end position. Henry has been a captain and a stable part of the offense in recent years. At age 29, he can still play. The Patriots will likely be in the mix there. As for Gesicki, they rolled the dice on him as a free agent this past summer and got mixed results. Don’t be surprised if he explores other options.

Offensive Line

OT Trent Brown, OL Mike Onwenu OL James Ferentz, OT Riley Reiff, OT Tyrone Wheatley Jr. (ERFA)

Brown looks like he’s done in New England, especially with him reportedly talking about playing with a different team next season. Onwenu is one of the offense’s steadiest building blocks. Trying to keep him in New England will be a priority. As for Ferentz and Wheatley, the Patriots can essentially choose whether want either or both back.

Defensive Line

No players from this group are set to become free agents next season. However, 33-year-old Lawrence Guy could be a cap casualty next year. The team could save $3 million against the cap if they cut him.

Linebackers

LB Mack Wilson, LB Josh Uche, LB Anfernee Jennings

There will be some big decisions to make at this position in 2024. Jennings has developed into a solid starter and edge player. Wilson has thrived as an edge rusher down the stretch this year. Then there’s Uche. The fourth-year pass rusher had 11.5 sacks last year, but saw his role diminish in 2023. He could end up getting a bigger offer from a team that wants to use him in a more prominent role.

Secondary

S Kyle Dugger, DB Jalen Mills, DB Myles Bryant, CB Alex Austin (ERFA)

Dugger is the priority here. He’s developed into a core part of the defense. He’s not a household name, but keeping him in Foxborough will be important (and expensive). Mills, who turns 30 this year, has had a smaller role. He could be on the outs. Meanwhlie, Bryant’s role continues to grow. He’s a candidate to return.

Special Teams

ST Matthew Slater, ST Cody Davis

For Slater, a return has less to do with a contract and more to do with whether he retires. Meanwhile, Davis is a core special teamer who worked his way back from an injury last year. Expect the team to try and keep him around.

Practice Squad

DB Breon Borders, DL Will Bradley-King, LB Joe Giles-Harris, CB Azizi Hearn, DL Trysten Hill, DB William Hooper, WR T.J. Luther, OL Kody Russey, TE Matt Sokol, OL Andrew Stueber, RB Ke’Shawn Vaughn

It’s always unclear who on the practice squad is going to stick around. Russey and Sokol are solid candidates. But we’ll find out who’s sticking around when the Patriots start handing out futures deals in the coming months.
