Oklahoma Coach Brent Venables Discusses LB Danny Stutsman’s Future Ahead of Alamo Bowl.

Amid speculation that star linebacker Danny Stutsman may forgo his senior season to enter the NFL Draft, Sooners’ coach Brent Venables refrained from making definitive statements regarding Stutsman’s plans for the future.

During a press conference held in San Antonio on Thursday, both Venables and Arizona head coach Jedd Fisch addressed various topics, including Stutsman’s rumored departure from Oklahoma.

Following a report from SoonerScoop.com that suggested Stutsman had expressed his intention to pursue an NFL career and not return to Norman, Venables chose to defer to Stutsman, stating, “Everything has its time, and whenever Danny’s prepared to let everybody know what his future is gonna look like, out of respect for him, I’ll reserve comment for that moment in time.”

Throughout his tenure at Oklahoma, Stutsman has demonstrated impressive performance, accumulating 261 tackles, 28 tackles for loss, seven sacks, four forced fumbles, three interceptions (including one returned for a touchdown), and seven pass breakups over three years.

Despite battling an ankle injury that sidelined him during the second half of a game against Kansas and prevented him from participating in Bedlam, Stutsman showcased his talent during the 2023 season, recording 99 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles, and an interception returned for a touchdown against Tulsa.

Venables praised Stutsman’s leadership qualities and contributions to the team, highlighting his impact on and off the field. In Stutsman’s potential absence, the Sooners will rely on returning linebackers Kip Lewis, Kobie McKinzie, and Jaren Kanak, along with newcomers Samuel Omosigho, Lewis Carter, and Phil Picciotti.

Despite the possibility of adding to the linebacker corps, Venables expressed gratitude for Stutsman’s dedication and contributions to the team over the past two years.
