Although they have played well thus far in the season, the New York Yankees are always hurt.
This season, New York has already had to deal with a few serious injuries, but they have handled them remarkably well. As some of the team’s best players begin to return, the Yankees, who lead the American League East, should get even better.
Superutility man D.J. LeMahieu appeared to be returning soon, but his status is now somewhat uncertain. Tuesday was LeMahieu’s first minor league rehab assignment, but he had to leave the game because of persistent right foot soreness.
Three-time All-Star Evan Longoria is one player who could make a lot of sense if the Yankees decide to look at free agency for a veteran option to provide more depth in the infield if LeMahieu is unable to return soon.
The seasoned infielder is searching for his next opportunity and is still available. He was a key figure in the clubhouse during his 2023 season with the Arizona Diamondbacks. In 74 games, he also blasted 11 home runs and drove in 28 runs.
Though perhaps not the player he once was, Longoria is a shrewd veteran who could help coach some of the Yankees’ young players and, in the event that LeMahieu misses more time than anticipated, could give the team some more reliable depth at a cheap cost.
