SAD NEWS: NY Islanders Head Coach Patrick Roy Reflects on Past Experience Before.

Before Game 3, NY Islanders Head Coach Patrick Roy Considers the Past

The NY Islanders are focused on winning Game 3 at UBS Arena after their appalling performance in Game 2 against the Carolina Hurricanes. While dwelling on the past will not alter the outcome from last night, the Islanders can grow from their errors.

As the Islanders look to narrow their series deficit to one game on Thursday, Patrick Roy—a four-time Stanley Cup champion with the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche—is relying on his own playoff experiences.

Roy’s Canadiens were trailing the Quebec Nordiques 2-0 in the 1993 playoffs’ opening round after losing both of their road games. The Canadiens led by two goals going into the third frame of Game 1. With 1:29 left in the game, the Nordiques closed the gap to one and tied the score 41 seconds later. In the final seconds of overtime, Scott Young gave Quebec the lead and the victory.

After being thoroughly outmatched in Game 2, the Habs had to win to go back to Montreal. After winning the next four games and the series, the Habs went on to win the Stanley Cup.

Regarding the parallels between his circumstances in Montreal and the current state of the Islanders, Roy stated today, “We gathered, we rallied at home, you have your fans in the building, you have the energy at home—and that is going to be very important.” “Hopefully, we will answer back.”

The Islanders will probably return to practice tomorrow after having the day off today. After losing 4-1 at home in game 5 of the 2001 Stanley Cup Finals, Roy’s Avalanche faced elimination and had to return to New Jersey. They were given the day off between games 5 and 6.

Regarding that day off, Roy said, “That was huge.” “Relaxing and spending that day at home was a much-needed change from flying the next day to play Game 6 in New Jersey… I am not sure if we would have won if we had played the next day. However, I believe that day off allows everyone to take stock of our actions and consider what we could have done better as a team.

The Islanders will have to reflect carefully on what went wrong in Game 2 and make many adjustments. With a loss on Thursday, they will trail 3-0 in the series—a comeback that has only been accomplished four times in NHL history.
