Fit for a 1,000-Yard Free Agent RB is the Giants
The running back situation for the New York Giants in 2024 will be drastically different without Saquon Barkley. The team wisely replaced its pro-bowl runner with smart veteran Devin Singletary, but another former Buffalo Bills’ back, Latavius Murray, could also help.
Dan Duggan of The Athletic says that Murray could support a rotation similar to Barkley’s. Murray is “another veteran option, but any signing at running back would likely be for a minimum contract,” as Duggan pointed out.
Giants general manager Joe Schoen would be wise to sign a Pro Bowler who ran for 1,066 yards in 2015. The player would be a good fit for the team on a short-term contract. “It would not be a surprise if Schoen adds a veteran to the mix,” according to Duggan.
Murray’s selection would inject new life into the seasoned backup cliché following two seasons of believing in Matt Breida to fill it. Murray would contribute similarly, but giving Breida “a third consecutive cheap one-year contract would make sense to add leadership to a young group” would not make sense.
Murray would also provide more of a grinder in between the tackles for the Giants. He would help offset the power that was lost when Barkley signed a free agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Latavius Murray Is a Wise Add for the Giants
Murray is one of the league’s most experienced backs. He has played for the Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, and Oakland Raiders, where he spent his most fruitful years.
Murray is a journeyman whose prime was nearly ten years ago, but there is a reason he keeps getting jobs in the NFL. He is a resilient, adaptable, and eager runner.
Murray played for the Bills towards the end of the previous campaign, gaining 300 yards and four touchdowns on 79 carries. Like he did for this touchdown against the Raiders, he is not afraid to lower his pads in order to force contact and win at the goal line.
