Jayson Werth’s horse is a darling of the Kentucky Derby.
For those residing in Philadelphia who wish to potentially profit from Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, Dornoch might be well worth the investment.
Why it matters: Dornoch, a racehorse with a strong chance of winning this year’s Churchill Downs championship, is partially owned by former Phillies slugger Jayson Werth.
Driving the news: Dornoch, the first leg of the coveted Triple Crown, is ridden by jockey Luis Saez and is listed at 20-1 odds to win the 150th Kentucky Derby.
The No. 1 spot, which has produced eight Derby winners over the years but none since 1986, is being challenged by Dornoch, the brother of last year’s winner, Mage, according to the Centre Daily Times.
Quick refresher: Werth spent 15 years as a Major League Baseball player, primarily with the Washington Nationals and Philadelphia Phillies.
During his three seasons with the Phillies, he played outfield and contributed to the team’s 2008 World Series victory.
The mystery: According to the Inquirer, Werth was raised close to an Illinois horse farm and developed an interest in horse racing after witnessing a race on television at a country club in Florida.
According to the Courier-Journal, Werth paid $325,000 to racehorse management group Oracle Bloodstock in 2022 for Dornoch.
Werth once owned a stake in more than twenty horses.
What they are saying: Werth says that entering a horse racetrack causes him far more anxiety than when he plays baseball.
“I get sick from this sport physically. He told the Inquirer, “I am just a wreck from the beginning of the day.”
