Meet the Giants’ UDFAs, PK, Rutgers’ Jude McAtamney
Is McAtamney Graham Gano’s rival or just a caddy?
Is placekicker Jude McAtamney, an undrafted free agent, going to face off against seasoned kicker Graham Gano on the New York Giants’ 90-man roster? Is he only on the roster to relieve some of Gano’s workload while the 37-year-old recovers from knee surgery that put him on the disabled list in 2023?
In his native Ireland, McAtamney was a Gaelic football player. After witnessing another Irishman from Gaelic football commit to Georgia Tech to play placekicker in 2020, he made the decision to give American football a try.
According to ESPN, McAtamney took advantage of a 2021 opportunity at Division II Chowan University to earn a 2022 opportunity to kick for Rutgers.
For the Scarlet Knights in 2022, McAtamney converted 12 of 18 field goals and 23 of 24 extra points. With the exception of one unsuccessful field goal attempt, Rutgers only used him as a kickoff specialist in 2023.
McAtamney told ESPN that he made 17 of 20 kicks at Rutgers’ Pro Day, received an invitation to the Giants’ Local Pro Day, and made 10 of 10 kicks there despite not having a 2023 placekicking record.
