As free agent signings go, this was a pretty good one and one of Josh Heupel….

Tennessee HC Josh Heupel shuts down theory that picked up steam during the 2023 season

Towards the conclusion of the 2023 season, speculation emerged among Tennessee Vols enthusiasts suggesting that freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava’s limited playtime was intentional, hinting at a predetermined decision to redshirt him during his inaugural season at Knoxville.

Despite his promising potential, Nico only appeared in four regular-season games, strategically preserving his redshirt status. Coach Josh Heupel addressed inquiries after the Vols’ victorious Citrus Bowl, indicating that the notion of redshirting Nico wasn’t considered until late in the season. He emphasized the fluidity of player roles, citing the unpredictable nature of the game and potential injuries that could thrust Nico into a pivotal role at any moment.

Nico, echoing Heupel’s sentiments, expressed his focus on learning and developing behind fellow quarterback Joe throughout the season, with redshirting never crossing his mind.

Throughout the regular season, Nico’s appearances were mainly confined to lopsided victories, with few opportunities arising due to the team’s performance. The prospect of Nico’s redshirt being utilized seemed remote, serving more as a safety net for the highly touted recruit rather than a necessity.

Speculation within the Tennessee program, as noted by The Athletic’s Joe Rexrode, suggests that Nico’s tenure might be brief, with his talent potentially propelling him to the NFL after the 2025 season. If this scenario unfolds, it implies significant success for Nico and the Vols, including potential College Football Playoff appearances and recognition on the national stage, possibly even garnering attention at the Heisman ceremonies in New York.
