With Spencer Steer batting, Elly De La Cruz stole second base in the sixth inning as the Reds trailed 3-1. De La Cruz broke for third base as pitcher Slade Cecconi readied himself for the next pitch. Before De La Cruz was tagged out, Cecconi held the ball for an additional second and threw to third base to put him in a rundown.
According to Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, “outs are at a premium in this ballpark.” “The fact that things can change quickly here makes me feel the same way as I do at Colorado.” So that was a huge out. We talk about that, we rehearsed it in Spring Training over and over and over again.”
Although Steer walked and Jake Fraley notched a single after the running gaffe, the Reds came up empty in the inning. De La Cruz declined to speak to reporters after the game.
