Giants head coach Brian Daboll is contemplating assuming play-calling duties for the upcoming 2024 season. In the past two seasons, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka has handled this responsibility. However, following a regression in offensive performance last season, Daboll is considering a change.
In 2023, despite efforts to bolster their offensive arsenal, the Giants faced setbacks such as a struggling offensive line and key player injuries, notably quarterback Daniel Jones and tight end Darren Waller. Now, as the team enters its third year under Daboll’s leadership, he is exploring the possibility of personally managing play-calling.
Daboll expressed, “It’s something I’m looking into… I’ve been doing a bunch of research, but no decision has been made.” He acknowledges the trend of head coaches assuming play-calling duties, citing several examples across the league. Daboll himself has extensive experience as a play-caller, having served as offensive coordinator for various teams in the past.
While Daboll has yet to finalize his decision, it’s not uncommon for a coach entering their third year to seek greater involvement, particularly following a disappointing season. With the potential addition of a new quarterback, the Giants could be eyeing a fresh start both on the field and in their play-calling approach.
