Carlos Estevez, the closer for the Angels, is traded to the Phillies.
Ahead of the deadline, the Philadelphia Phillies completed their second major transaction. The Phillies have acquired one of the top arms on the market in Carlos Estevez after moving reliever Seranthony Dominguez and Cristian Pache to acquire outfielder Austin Hays from the Baltimore Orioles.
After finishing as an All-Star with the Los Angeles Angels the previous season, Estevez has improved even more in his walk-year campaign this year. This season, the 31-year-old pitcher has a ridiculous 0.735 WHIP and a 2.38 ERA. His walk rate is a very low 4.0%.
Throughout the season, the Phillies have tended to rely more on a committee approach, with Jeff Hoffman and Jose Alvarado serving as the main candidates for saves in late-game situations. Estevez now offers them a third choice, if he doesn’t merely take over the position when he joins the team formally.
The Phillies Bullpen Following the Trade of Estevez
The Phillies, who own one of the finest rotations in baseball, if not the best, have survived this season with a bullpen that has generally been about league average. Their bullpen is 16th in terms of ERA at 3.96, but is second only to the Mets in K/9 (10.30).
Both All-Star pitchers Matt Strahm and Jeff Hoffman have an ERA under 2.00 this season. Additionally having a great season, Orion Kerkering has pitched to a 2.33 ERA. Seranthony Dominguez and Jose Alvarado, two of the Phillies’ most often used relievers, both struggled and pitched to an ERA above 4.00.
