“I got to appreciate it when I wasn’t as good as I once was, but I still maintained my standing. I’m not talking about normal basketball standards here. I wasn’t that terrific anymore. I was like, ‘Okay, you aint him no more, but I still got my status, so let me use this card,’ even though I could still hoops.” (1:30)
Wade acknowledged that during his time in Chicago, he wasn’t the greatest mentor. Wade clarified that his own performance downturn had an impact on his actions. He no longer felt he was at his best, even though he was still able to play at a high level.
Wade apologized for not being a better mentor and leader after giving some thought to what he had done. His admission emphasizes how crucial it is for seasoned athletes to serve as role models for their less experienced colleagues. Notwithstanding the difficulties he had while in Chicago, Butler went on to have a prosperous NBA career and kept improving to rank among the best players in the league.
