MLB: Detroit Tigers retire Jim Leyland’s No. 10
DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers retired Jim Leyland’s No. 10, placing the Hall of Fame manager’s name and number in white on a brick wall adjacent to Sparky Anderson, the winner of the World Series.
Leyland remarked, “It’s hard to believe when I look out on that wall and see my name with the Tiger greats,” on Saturday night before Detroit’s game against the Kansas City Royals.
Leyland took a leisurely drive in a white Corvette to get to the on-field presentation, which allowed him to wave to fans from the foul pole all the way to Detroit’s dugout down the third base line.
Two weeks before turning 79, he was elected into baseball’s Hall of Fame in December of last year, and he was enshrined as the 23rd manager that month.
Leyland has a 700-597 record with the Tigers from 2006 to 2013, one of his 22-season victories in 1,769 regular-season games. In his first season as manager of the team, 2006, he guided Detroit to the World Series. In 2012, the team earned its second of four consecutive AL Central titles under his leadership.
