This past spring, Sports Illustrated’s NFL insider Albert Breer mentioned that before the New York Giants selected young wide receiver Malik Nabers with the sixth overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, teams were concerned about his reputation as “high maintenance.”
After working with the youngster since the spring, New York receivers coach Mike Groh seemed unfazed, despite Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com acknowledging on Monday that “Giants decision-makers wondered aloud” before the draft how Nabers may respond to a dearth of targets during games.
Nabers deserves credit for acknowledging early in training camp that he was “going to be the first guy that’s always gonna get the ball” no more. Though he made that statement prior to frequently surprising spectators and fans with highlight-reel plays during practices, it appears certain that he will now be starting quarterback Daniel Jones’ top target starting with New York’s Sept. 8 regular-season opener against the Minnesota Vikings.
