Orioles “Likely” to Acquire 27-Year-Old Slugger for $16.5 Million Option
Eloy Jiminez’s trade to the Baltimore Orioles appears to be one of the biggest steals of the 2024 trade deadline. However, Jim Bowden of The Athletic says it’s improbable that he’ll play for his new squad in the future.
On August 12, Bowden stated, “I think Eloy Jiménez will help the Orioles down the stretch and liked the Orioles’ acquisition of him at the trade deadline.” “It’s unlikely that the Orioles will pick up Jiménez’s $16.5 million club option ($3 million buyout) from his time with the White Sox.”
In 2019, Jiminez agreed to a $43 million, six-year contract with the Chicago White Sox. The agreement includes options for the last two years at $16.5 and $18.5 million, respectively.
Jiminez was acquired by Baltimore for a left-handed pitching prospect before the July 30 MLB trade deadline. Ronald Blum of AP News reports that as part of the agreement, Chicago contributed $4 million in cash.
Jiminez, who is hitting.500 with four RBIs in eight games with the Orioles, has found new life after moving. The 27-year-old was placed 41st by Bowden in his rankings of the top 50 free agents.
