Gabriela Sabatini Discusses Her Tennis Hiatus, Rivalries with Graf, and Current Players She Admires Most

In a recent interview, former tennis star Gabriela Sabatini opened up about her time away from the sport, reflecting on her career and the new generation of players that have caught her attention. Sabatini, once ranked world No. 3, stepped away from professional tennis in 1996, a decision that left many fans wondering why she left the game at the peak of her powers.

“When I decided to stop, it was because I wanted to experience life outside of tennis,” Sabatini said. “The demands of the sport were so high, and I felt like I needed time for myself, to explore other passions and live a more balanced life.”

Despite stepping away from the limelight, Sabatini remains one of the sport’s most beloved figures. During her career, her rivalry with Steffi Graf was one of the defining matchups of women’s tennis in the 1980s and early 1990s. The two faced each other 40 times, with Graf winning the majority of those encounters, including their famous clash in the 1991 Wimbledon final. However, Sabatini holds no regrets and looks back fondly on their battles.

“Steffi was an incredible competitor. Every time we played, it felt like a final, whether it was or not. She pushed me to be better, and I think we both brought out the best in each other,” Sabatini recalled. “Even though she won more matches, I cherish those memories because they shaped my career and made me the player I was.”

Now enjoying life beyond tennis, Sabatini keeps a close eye on the current women’s tour and shared some of the players she admires most.

“I really enjoy watching Iga Świątek. She’s so composed and mature on the court for her age. I also think Coco Gauff is incredibly talented, and I love her fighting spirit. They represent the future of the game, and it’s exciting to see where they’ll take it.”

Sabatini, who still plays exhibition matches and remains involved in tennis through her foundation, ended the interview on a reflective note, expressing gratitude for the sport that shaped her life.

“Tennis gave me so much, and I’m grateful every day for the opportunities it brought. It’s been wonderful to see how the sport has evolved, and I’m proud to have been a part o

f its history.”
