The new catcher is an 11-year MLB veteran, most recently appeared in 41 games for the Giants last season. While his offensive numbers are modest, with a .218 career batting average and 48 home runs across 543 games, he is a dependable defender who can step in as a starter when needed.
According to Aram Leighton of Just Baseball, the Braves have agreed to a minor-league contract with catcher Curt Casali.
With Travis d’Arnaud now in Los Angeles, the Braves face some uncertainty regarding the backup catcher role behind Sean Murphy. However, they have several viable options. Chadwick Tromp, who has served as the team’s third catcher for years, is more than capable of filling the backup spot.
Additionally, top prospect Drake Baldwin is waiting for his chance to shine. If he excels during Spring Training, he could force his way onto the major-league roster. However, it might be better for his development if the Braves assign him to Gwinnett, where he can gain consistent playing time rather than being used sparingly in Atlanta.
