BREAKING: Yankees Secure Blockbuster Deal for Top Free-Agent Left-Handed Reliever

The New York Yankees recently acquired Devin Williams to take over as the team’s closer, but one analyst suggests they’re not finished strengthening their bullpen.

MLB analyst Rucker Haringey of FanSided confirms the Yankees still have a critical gap to address: a left-handed reliever. Haringey argues that free-agent Andrew Chafin would be a perfect fit for the Yankees’ needs.

“The team still needs a lefty with swing-and-miss stuff to handle quality left-handed hitters in high-leverage situations,” Haringey wrote. He noted that while Tanner Scott would have been an ideal choice, the Dodgers outbid the Yankees, forcing them to consider alternatives like Chafin.

Chafin, a seasoned veteran, pitched in 62 games last season while splitting time between the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers. In those appearances, he struck out 70 batters over 56.1 innings, posting a respectable 3.51 ERA. Despite losing a touch of his fastball’s velocity, Chafin remains a formidable opponent for top-tier left-handed hitters, making him a valuable asset for any bullpen.

Haringey also pointed out that Chafin’s current free-agent status makes him an affordable option for the Yankees. “There’s a chance Chafin can be landed on a one or two-year deal with a moderate salary based on his age. Every day that passes should see his asking price decline. The Yankees can’t wait too long to pounce on the potential bargain southpaw,” Haringey explained.

This potential acquisition aligns with the Yankees’ aggressive offseason strategy. According to USA Today’s MLB insider Bob Nightengale, the Yankees have already bolstered their roster by signing ace Max Fried to an eight-year, $218 million contract, trading for closer Devin Williams and outfielder Cody Bellinger, and acquiring first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. Despite these moves, Nightengale reported on January 7 that the Yankees were actively exploring additional upgrades, including a left-handed reliever and an infielder.

“They have had talks with free-agent left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin and infielder Brendan Rodgers,” Nightengale wrote. “The Yankees are also trying to deal starter Marcus Stroman to clear his $18 million salary. The best news for the Yankees is that the AL has gotten weaker this winter, with National League teams outspending the AL by nearly $900 million.”

Signing Chafin would help fill the void left by Tim Hill, another left-handed reliever who remains a free agent. Hill’s absence leaves a noticeable gap in the bullpen, and Chafin’s ability to deliver in high-pressure moments could provide the Yankees with a reliable option for late-game situations.

Meanwhile, Devin Williams, acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers, is ready to embrace the spotlight as the Yankees’ new closer. The hard-throwing right-hander brings an impressive résumé, including a dominant 2024 season in which he posted a 1.25 ERA across 22 games.

“I’m excited for it,” Williams said. “The Yankees have a long history—Mariano Rivera, Aroldis Chapman—they’re some of the best ever. I’m hoping to add my name to that list. I thrive on the energy from the fans, and I think that will help me succeed.”

Williams’ confidence and track record make him a strong candidate to lead New York’s bullpen in 2025. With his addition and the potential signing of Chafin, the Yankees could further solidify their roster, ensuring they remain a formidable contender in the upcoming season.
