The Dallas Cowboys, known as “America’s Team,” have a legendary status in the NFL. Despite their rich history and immense popularity, their current coaching search has taken an unexpected turn. With many top candidates already hired by other teams, the Cowboys appear to be exploring a unique and surprising path for their next head coach. This development has captured the attention of fans and analysts, who are eager to see how the situation plays out for such a high-profile franchise.
When the Cowboys parted ways with Mike McCarthy, who had achieved three consecutive 12-win seasons, many expected Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to be the frontrunner for the position. Moore, a former Cowboys quarterback and offensive coordinator, appeared to be the perfect fit. His offensive expertise and familiarity with the Cowboys’ system made him a natural candidate. However, despite his credentials and a seemingly ideal alignment with the team’s needs, the coaching search has taken a more unpredictable direction.
Kellen Moore’s rapid rise within the Cowboys organization showcased his potential as a future head coach. After retiring from his playing career in 2017, Moore joined the Cowboys as their quarterbacks coach and was promoted to offensive coordinator two years later. Jerry Jones, the team’s owner, saw him as a rising star with the offensive acumen to lead the team someday. His trajectory seemed to align perfectly with the franchise’s goals when McCarthy’s tenure ended, yet the process has become far more uncertain than anticipated.
Following the 2022 season, Kellen Moore left the Cowboys, with Mike McCarthy assuming play-calling duties. Moore moved on to become the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers and later played a pivotal role in the Eagles’ NFC Championship Game in 2024. Although he wasn’t widely regarded as a top candidate for head coaching roles across the league, his familiarity with the Cowboys made him a logical choice for Jones. However, reports suggest that the team is now looking elsewhere for their next head coach.
The Cowboys appear to be shifting their focus toward current offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. Initially seen as a strong candidate for an expanded role, Schottenheimer has now reportedly become the primary focus of the team’s coaching search. Clarence Hill Jr. has reported that the Cowboys are close to finalizing a deal to promote Schottenheimer, marking a significant shift in the franchise’s direction. This decision would be a departure from earlier speculation about Moore and signals a renewed commitment to Schottenheimer’s vision.
Brian Schottenheimer, 51, joined the Cowboys in 2022 as a coaching analyst under Mike McCarthy, bringing with him decades of NFL coaching experience. He previously served as the passing game coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars and as the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks. While Schottenheimer has never been a head coach, his extensive background as a play-caller provides him with the foundation to step into a leadership role. His familiarity with the Cowboys’ system could facilitate a seamless transition if he is indeed named head coach.
Schottenheimer’s tenure with the Seattle Seahawks was marked by a mix of success and challenges. While the offense started strong in the 2020 season, it faltered in key areas such as third-down conversions, finishing 27th in the league. The unit also struggled with efficiency, ranking 13th in Expected Points Added (EPA) per play and 16th in Success Rate over two seasons. These issues ultimately led to Schottenheimer’s dismissal, raising questions about his ability to sustain success under pressure.
Despite these concerns, Schottenheimer’s adaptability in tailoring offensive schemes to his personnel remains one of his strengths. However, his offenses have often been criticized for lacking the creativity and innovation seen in many modern NFL systems. This conservative approach may be a concern for Cowboys fans who expect dynamic, high-powered play-calling in an increasingly fast-paced league.
Promoting Schottenheimer could also be seen as a financially prudent move for Jerry Jones, who might prefer to avoid the higher costs associated with hiring an outside star coordinator. This decision may allow the team to retain continuity and stability within the coaching staff but could disappoint fans hoping for a more ambitious hire. Whether this approach aligns with the Cowboys’ Super Bowl aspirations remains to be seen.
If Schottenheimer is named head coach, his ability to innovate and adapt will be critical in determining whether he can lead the Cowboys back to championship contention. Balancing his reputation for simplicity with the need for bold offensive strategies will be essential as the team looks to capitalize on its talented roster and return to the NFL’s elite.
