Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has expressed openness to negotiating a contract extension, but the two sides remain far apart in discussions. During an appearance on Abriendo Sports, Guerrero revealed that he is willing to negotiate an extension through the first full day of spring training. However, he also confirmed that he had recently declined a massive offer of approximately $340 million from the Blue Jays.
The revelation has sparked debate among analysts, with some questioning the Blue Jays’ approach and others urging the team to secure Guerrero’s future before he becomes a free agent. Jim Bowden of The Athletic argued that Toronto should aim higher, suggesting the team offer Guerrero a 12-year, $477 million deal. Bowden highlighted Guerrero’s immense value, stating, “While $340 million is a significant sum, it’s not even close to what he’d command in free agency. Teams with deep pockets like the Rangers, Red Sox, Yankees, and Mets could easily make a play for him.”
Guerrero, one of the most dynamic hitters in baseball, has become a cornerstone of the Blue Jays’ lineup. His performance at the plate and leadership on the field make him a prized asset, and his free agency would undoubtedly ignite a bidding war among big-market teams.
