The Georgia Bulldogs felt that they exceeded expectations last season, even though they won the SEC Championship and qualified for the 2024 College Football Playoffs.
Following a first-round bye, sophomore Gunner Stockton led the Bulldogs in their playoff quarterfinal matchup against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish after quarterback Carson Beck sustained an injury late in the season against the Texas Longhorns. The Beck injury proved to be too much for Georgia to overcome, as they lost to the eventual runner-up Fighting Irish, 23-10.The Bulldogs’ injury luck doesn’t seem to be improving as the 2025 season approaches. The availability of expected starting left lineman Monroe Freeling for spring football in a few months is doubtful due to his shoulder surgery this offseason, according to On3’s Jake Rowe.
Freeling will hopefully be fully recovered by the time fall camp arrives this summer, but it’s difficult to miss the crucial spring months, particularly when a new starting quarterback is being added to the lineup.
Freeling started the last five games of the 2024 season at left tackle and participated in all 14 Bulldogs games. In his 609 snaps last season, Freeling allowed three sacks and 21 quarterback pressures, according to Pro Football Focus.
Georgia can also rely on Earnest Greene, a left tackle, while Freeling is absent. At LT, Green started the first nine games of the season before missing time with an upper-body injury. Even after recovering late in the season, he was unable to return to his starting position.
Since former quarterback Carson Beck left the team earlier this month to join the Miami Hurricanes, Athens will have a new spring season. Sadly, Stockton will have to start his reign with some uncertainty on his blindside, but the era will soon begin.
