Brant Boyer has been tasked with supervising the San Francisco 49ers’ awful special teams. The 49ers hired Boyer as special teams coordinator on Monday, hoping he can improve units that played a big role in their 6-11 season in 2024. Boyer, 53, a former NFL linebacker with a 10-year career, has spent the previous nine seasons as the Jets’ special teams coordinator. Todd Bowles hired Boyer in 2016, and he was retained during two head coaching changes
Niners defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who was hired to take over his previous post on Friday, probably provided Boyer a positive recommendation. When Saleh became head coach of the Jets in 2020, he kept Boyer on his staff, and they worked together for three or more seasons. During Boyer’s time in New York, the Jets were second in the NFL in special teams scores (nine) and blocked punts (eight). They ranked fifth in opponent kickoff return average (21.8).Boyer succeeded Brian Schneider, who was sacked on January 7 after three seasons with the 49ers. Head coach Kyle Shanahan fired Schneider after the 49ers ranked 30th in the NFL in yards allowed per punt return (13.7) and 24th in yards allowed per kickoff return. The 49ers also allowed a blocked punt in a loss to the Vikings, gave up successful fake punts in losses to the Rams and Cardinals, lost a fumble on a kickoff return, were one of six teams to allow a kickoff return for a touchdown, and had three kickoffs land out of bounds, which tied for the league lead
