As January winds down and National Signing Day approaches next Wednesday, recruiting buzz is heating up for the Michigan Wolverines. Here’s the latest in today’s recruiting roundup, starting with Michigan’s attempt to flip a top wide receiver from its biggest rival.
Michigan Making a Push for Five-Star Ohio State WR Commit
The Wolverines haven’t traditionally allocated significant NIL resources to wide receivers, but that could change with five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood joining the fold.
Recruiting insider EJ Holland ($) recently noted that Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore and several staff members have followed five-star wide receiver Chris Henry Jr. on social media. Henry, who has been committed to Ohio State for six months, is ranked as the top wide receiver in the 2026 class and the No. 3 overall prospect in the 247Sports composite rankings.
While there’s no strong indication that Henry is seriously considering Michigan at this point, the Wolverines have a history of working behind the scenes to make unexpected recruiting moves.
“Henry hasn’t publicly mentioned Michigan yet, but the Wolverines operate quietly and are tough to beat when they take the ‘won’t be outbid’ approach,” Holland wrote. “If I were the Ellisons, I’d want to put my investment in the best position to succeed. Michigan has done that with its offensive line and could do the same with Henry.”
One key connection to note: Henry’s recruiting coordinator, Rudy Cambero, previously worked with Michigan when he helped recruit Mason Graham.
“Every school in the country has inquired about his recruitment,” Cambero told Holland. “Ultimately, it comes down to where he feels comfortable and which system fits him best. I always encourage coaches to have a conversation with him and see what happens. He’s an Ohio State commit, but with the unpredictable nature of college football recruiting, you never know where a player might end up.”
Right now, a flip to Michigan doesn’t seem highly likely. Henry even responded to Holland’s report with a post featuring Ohio State wide receivers coach Brian Hartline. However, money plays a major role in today’s recruiting landscape, and as we’ve seen before, unexpected shifts can happen—just like when Underwood initially appeared to reject Michigan’s NIL offer before ultimately committing.
Top OL Target Narrows Down Schools
In other recruiting news, Michigan has made the top-12 list for 2026 four-star offensive lineman Carter Scruggs, keeping the Wolverines in the mix for one of the top blockers in his class.
Scruggs, who visited Ann Arbor three times last fall, including for the Michigan State victory, sees Michigan as a legitimate contender. Scruggs is ranked 124th out of 2026 players and 11th among interior offensive linemen.
Scruggs discussed his chosen schools with On3’s Steve Wiltfong ($), who confirmed Scruggs’ official visit in June.
“Michigan is known for putting O-linemen in the NFL,” Scruggs explained. “Fantastic academics. It is one of the top public schools for education. Relationship with the coaches; they have a lot going for them.”
Scruggs also stated that the top three priorities for him are “player development, education, and relationships.” Michigan may give him all three of these.
