When word first leaked out last Sunday that a new coach would be rejoining the crew, it was greeted with cheers. Before the 2023 season, Alabama made an attempt to entice the new caoch, but he chose to stay in Washington and help guide a team to the College Football Playoff National Championship game. He was once again considered for the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator role after Saban was replaced at Alabama by Kalen DeBoer, but he chose to join the Seattle Seahawks instead.
Ryan Grubb was formally named Alabama’s new offensive coordinator on Thursday.
Grubb and DeBoer are reconciling after a year apart.
In a statement issued by the university, DeBoer stated, “I have trusted Ryan Grubb for a long time, and having him on our staff only raises the caliber of coaches we have here at Alabama.” “He is among the nation’s top offensive thinkers, and I am excited to see what he will contribute to our organization in the future.”
When DeBoer and Grubb won NAIA national titles together, Grubb was DeBoer’s offensive line coach and run game coordinator at Sioux Falls. From 2014 to 2016, they collaborated at Eastern Michigan, and in 2017 and 2018, they were at Fresno State.
Before the 2019 season, DeBoer departed the Bulldogs to join Indiana, although Grubb remained at Fresno State and took DeBoer’s place as offensive coordinator. Grubb continued to serve as DeBoer’s coordinator and quarterbacks coach once he returned to Fresno as head coach in 2020.
In 2022, he followed him to Washington.
Regarding the attacking aspect of football, DeBoer has frequently stated that he and Grubb have a give-and-take relationship. Grubb has had a significant role in the achievement, even though DeBoer has established himself as an offensive-minded head coach.
The frequently injured Michael Penix Jr. found his career renewed under Grubb’s guidance at Washington and advanced to the 2023 Heisman Trophy finals. In terms of Total QBR, Penix finished that season in the top ten nationwide and EPA.

Austin Mack, a member of the 2023 class, was recruited by Washington primarily through Grubb. When the Folsom, California, quarterback joined DeBoer in Seattle, he was considered the quarterback of the future.
This spring and summer, Mack will compete against Ty Simpson and Keelon Russell for the starting quarterback position, surrounded by a coaching staff he knows well.
JaMarcus Shephard and Nick Sheridan are also anticipated to remain with Alabama. At Washington, both collaborated with Grubb.
