A report on Wednesday morning suggested that the Red Sox were actively discussing a trade for a veteran third baseman. However, by the end of the day, Boston had reportedly secured a different star at the hot corner.
After talks with the St. Louis Cardinals regarding Nolan Arenado, Craig Breslow and his front office instead made a splash by acquiring Alex Bregman. The move not only provided the Red Sox with the impactful right-handed bat they needed, but they also managed to avoid the lengthy contract Bregman initially sought.
With Bregman now in Boston, Arenado is unlikely to land at Fenway Park—a disappointing development for the eight-time All-Star, who was reportedly “highly, highly motivated” to join the Red Sox. While his future remains uncertain, ESPN’s Buster Olney weighed in on his market after Bregman’s reported commitment.
“Nolan Arenado moves to the forefront in the third base market, now that Bregman is off the board,” Olney posted on X Thursday morning. “The Yankees have not been engaged in conversations with the Cardinals about him.”
With Bregman off the market, teams that missed out on the former Astros star may now shift their focus to Arenado. The Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs were both reportedly in the mix for Bregman but ultimately watched him reunite with Red Sox manager Alex Cora.
