The Carolina Panthers have decided to let veteran linebacker Shaq Thompson enter free agency this offseason, the team announced Monday.
Panthers president of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan expressed gratitude for Thompson’s contributions, highlighting his leadership, passion, and commitment to both the team and his teammates over the past decade.
Thompson, 30, was selected by the Panthers as the 25th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. He ranks fourth in franchise history with 752 tackles and served as a team captain. His best season came in 2022, when he recorded a career-high 135 tackles and amassed 462 tackles between 2019 and 2022.
However, injuries have significantly impacted his availability, limiting him to just six games over the last two seasons.
NFL teams have until March 4 to assign franchise or transition tags. The free agent negotiation period begins on March 10, with signings allowed starting March 12.
