Latest Lions News: Due to defensive needs, The Lions decides to take a few big swings on the market.

The Detroit Lions have several defensive needs, and Bleacher Report predicts they could land a valuable free agent in defensive tackle Milton Williams in 2025. The Lions have a track record of finding bargain deals in free agency, and despite having ample cap space, they may take a similar approach next offseason.

Defensively, Detroit must address gaps in both the defensive line and secondary. They can either pursue high-profile signings or opt for cost-effective contracts with quality players. Along the defensive front, reinforcements are crucial, and Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay sees Williams as an ideal addition.

Kay notes that the Philadelphia Eagles may struggle to afford Williams, whose market value could reach $15 million per year. While he has been an asset to their defense, the team has other financial priorities following their Super Bowl win. Kay argues that the Lions would be a great fit for Williams, as he would strengthen their defensive line, which suffered last season due to injuries. Playing alongside elite edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson could also elevate Williams’ performance.

Kay projects a four-year, $50 million deal for Williams, a reasonable price for a rising talent. Throughout his career, Williams has recorded 132 tackles and 11.5 sacks. If Detroit signs him, they would not only improve their defense but also weaken a key NFC competitor.

Bleacher Report has consistently highlighted Williams as a potential steal in free agency. Analyst Moe Moton included him on a list of underrated free agents for 2025, emphasizing his ability to make an impact despite limited playing time.

In Philadelphia, Williams has primarily been a backup, starting in just 19 of 67 games and playing under 49% of defensive snaps in each of his four seasons. However, he showcased his talent in 2022 with 36 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and four sacks. After a quiet 2023, he rebounded in 2024 with career highs in sacks (five), quarterback hits (10), and tackles for loss (seven).

Some believe Williams’ success is partly due to playing alongside top-tier talent like Fletcher Cox, Jalen Carter, and Jordan Davis. Still, his pass-rushing potential makes him a worthy investment as he enters his prime at age 26. If the Lions pair him with their strong defensive front, he could thrive similarly to how he did in Philadelphia. While Detroit needs pass rushers, Williams could provide a crucial boost to their defensive interior.
