During the Boston Bruins’ 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins, captain Brad Marchand suffered an injury early in the first period following an entanglement with Pierre-Olivier Joseph. The incident occurred when Joseph’s stick caught Marchand’s left skate, causing him to lose balance. As Joseph was already in motion for a hit, he attempted to pull back but was unable to prevent Marchand from crashing headfirst into the boards.
Marchand remained on the ice for several minutes before being assisted off and escorted down the tunnel to the locker room. He did not return for the remainder of the game. Following the match, Bruins interim head coach Joe Sacco told reporters he had yet to speak with Marchand and could not provide an update on his condition. However, he expressed concern about the play that led to the injury.
“I have to review the play again,” Sacco stated. “It looked like he was tripped into the boards with some extra contact that put him in a dangerous position. I thought we should have had a power play from that.”
David Pastrnak, who was on the ice when the collision occurred, did not witness it unfold directly but was quick to assist his teammate. The Bruins’ star forward expressed frustration over the lack of a penalty call on the play.
“It’s never good to lose your captain,” Pastrnak told reporters. “Especially someone like Marchy, who never stays down on the ice. For there to be no penalty call on that is unbelievable to me. If a player gets injured, especially a tough guy like Marchy, it should have been called. Hopefully, he’s all right and will be back soon.”
Marchand’s injury is a significant concern for the Bruins, as he is a key leader and playmaker for the team. While the extent of his condition remains unknown, his absence could be a challenge for Boston moving forward. The Bruins will await further updates, hoping their captain recovers quickly and returns to the lineup as soon as possible.
