Jadan Baugh, the rising star for the Florida Gators, is under significant pressure as he steps into the lead running back role for the team. After a strong freshman season where he rushed for 673 yards and seven touchdowns, Baugh now has high expectations placed on him to fill the void left by Montrell Johnson Jr., who recently entered the NFL. However, while his talent is undeniable, Florida’s running backs coach, Jabbar Juluke, isn’t quite ready to crown Baugh as the team’s next big star just yet.
Juluke believes that Baugh still has plenty of work to do before reaching his full potential. He likens the process of developing Baugh to planning a wedding: the finished product might look great, but there’s much preparation needed before it all comes together. Juluke says, “He has a lot of work to do,” emphasizing that Baugh’s development is a work in progress. Despite showing flashes of brilliance on the field, Baugh has yet to fully embrace the love and commitment that Juluke feels is necessary for true greatness in the game.
According to Juluke, Baugh’s love for football isn’t as deep as it needs to be. While Baugh is talented and enjoys the sport, Juluke feels that he’s not yet “in love” with it, which could limit his growth and potential. Juluke sees a high ceiling for Baugh, but acknowledges that there’s still significant room for improvement. This focus on developing a stronger passion for the game is central to Baugh’s growth as a player. Juluke stresses the importance of consistent improvement, not just for Baugh, but for everyone in the program, including himself as a coach.
The Gators are also dealing with the loss of Montrell Johnson Jr., who was not only a key contributor on the field, rushing for over 3,000 yards in his career, but also a vital leader in the locker room. As Baugh takes over as the lead back, he not only has to elevate his play but also fill the leadership void left behind by Johnson. With high expectations for the upcoming season, Baugh’s growth and development will be crucial to the Gators’ success, and coach Juluke is pushing him to keep improving every day.
