This offseason, the San Francisco 49ers faced significant losses on defense, parting ways with linebacker Dre Greenlaw and defensive end Leonard Floyd. With the 11th overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, Eric Edholm of the NFL Network projects the 49ers to select a versatile player capable of filling both voids: Georgia linebacker/edge rusher Jalon Walker.
According to Edholm, Walker’s versatility makes him an ideal fit for the 49ers’ needs. “The 49ers are now without LB Dre Greenlaw and edge Leonard Floyd; technically, Walker can help at both spots,” he explains. Walker’s dynamic skill set allows him to play as a traditional off-ball linebacker on running downs while shifting to a pass-rushing role in passing situations. This hybrid ability offers the potential for the 49ers to address two positions with a single pick.
However, Walker comes with question marks. As an off-ball linebacker, he lacks sharp instincts, which could limit his effectiveness against the run. On the edge, his smaller frame makes it difficult for him to hold his ground against larger offensive linemen. His primary value lies in his pass-rushing ability, which may not solve the 49ers’ pressing issues against the run.
Run defense is a glaring weakness for San Francisco. Without improvement in that area, they may struggle to create passing-down opportunities where Walker could shine. This makes the potential selection of Walker a bit of a gamble, as it doesn’t directly address their biggest defensive concern.
An alternative option for the 49ers could be Walker’s Georgia teammate, defensive end Mykel Williams. Unlike Walker, Williams is a larger, more physical presence who excels against the run. In fact, he would immediately become San Francisco’s best edge-setter, surpassing even Nick Bosa in that regard. Although Williams is still developing as a pass rusher, his youth, long arms, and raw potential make him an intriguing prospect.
Furthermore, Georgia’s track record of producing successful NFL edge rushers makes Williams a safer bet. Recent draft history, including the Philadelphia Eagles’ success with Georgia defenders, highlights the program’s ability to develop pro-ready talent.
While Walker offers versatility, Williams may provide a more immediate impact by strengthening the 49ers’ struggling run defense. With the draft approaching, the 49ers must decide whether they value Walker’s flexibility or Williams’ physical dominance as they look to reinforce their defensive front.
