Miami’s deliberation : Is the Potential No. 1 Pick Better Than Caleb Williams? Breaking Down the 2025 NFL Draft Debate.

Cam Ward is confident that he should be the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft. After an impressive season with the Miami Hurricanes, he became the all-time leader in combined touchdowns in Division history. While some have drawn comparisons between Ward and Patrick Mahomes, NFL Media analyst Charles Davis offered a different perspective—likening him to former USC quarterback Caleb Williams.

In Davis’ latest mock draft, he predicted the Tennessee Titans would select Ward with the first overall pick. A key factor in this projection is Ward’s ability to extend plays with his improvisational skills. Speaking on NFL Spotlight with Ari Meirov, Davis highlighted how Ward thrives when plays break down.

“At every level, he has made those kinds of plays,” Davis noted. “What stands out is his confidence—his belief in his arm, his ability to evade pressure, and his knack for keeping plays alive. And just like Aaron Rodgers, when he extends a play, he’s not looking to settle for a short checkdown. He’s aiming to take shots downfield.”

After studying Ward’s style, Davis came to an interesting conclusion: his closest NFL comparison isn’t Mahomes, but rather Caleb Williams.

Williams, known for his play-extending ability at USC, won the Heisman Trophy in 2022 and was selected first overall by the Chicago Bears in last year’s draft. However, his transition to the NFL came with challenges—he was sacked a league-high 68 times during his rookie season.

Ward’s dynamic playmaking ability could make him an enticing choice for a team in need of a franchise quarterback. However, his tendency to hold onto the ball in search of big plays, much like Williams, could also lead to similar struggles at the next level. While Ward has proven he can deliver game-changing moments, his success in the NFL will depend on his ability to adjust to the speed and complexity of professional defenses.

With the draft approaching, Ward remains a polarizing prospect, drawing comparisons to both Mahomes and Williams. Whether he lives up to those expectations remains to be seen, but his talent and improvisational skills make him one of the most intriguing players in the 2025 class.
