Hookies Latest Update: Virginia Tech Joins the Race for Elite In-State 2026 Wide Receiver Amidst Top Programs

Virginia Tech football, under head coach Brent Pry, has excelled in recruiting talent from within the state of Virginia. Whether through high school commitments or bringing players back via the transfer portal, Pry and his staff have made a significant impact in this area.

Since taking over following Justin Fuente’s departure, Pry understood that securing top in-state talent would be crucial to rebuilding the Hokies’ program. Over the past few recruiting cycles, his efforts have paid off, strengthening Virginia Tech’s presence in the Commonwealth. However, as the 2026 class takes shape, Pry and wide receivers coach Fontel Mines are focused on landing a highly coveted wide receiver prospect.

Currently, the Hokies have one commitment in the 2026 class—wide receiver Carnell Warren, who pledged to the program a few months ago. Now, Virginia Tech has made the Top 7 list for four-star wide receiver Travis Johnson, one of the top prospects in Virginia, according to 247Sports. Johnson announced his narrowed list on Friday, highlighting a competitive group of programs vying for his commitment. While the Hokies face stiff competition, making it onto Johnson’s shortlist is an encouraging sign for their recruiting efforts.

Johnson has lined up six visits for May and June, including a scheduled trip to Blacksburg on June 20. Additionally, he is working on setting up a visit to North Carolina, along with a meeting with Bill Belichick. His recruitment remains highly competitive, but Virginia Tech’s inclusion in his top choices indicates that the Hokies are in serious contention.

Standing at 6-foot-3 and 165 pounds, Johnson possesses a unique skill set that allows him to be a playmaker in multiple areas of the field. He brings size, athleticism, and versatility—attributes that could make him a game-changing addition to Virginia Tech’s offense. While the Hokies already have a group of promising young receivers, securing a player of Johnson’s caliber would elevate their offensive potential significantly.

Fontel Mines is likely leading Johnson’s recruitment, and his recent success in attracting talent to Virginia Tech bodes well for the Hokies’ chances. If Mines and Pry can continue their strong recruiting push, they may secure another key in-state player to bolster the 2026 class.
